得到孙坚等人相助的朱儁，在面对视如草芥的黄巾贼寇之时，还是犯了轻敌的毛病，在颖阳城下败给了颍川黄巾军的渠帅波才。
被波才率军追杀，一直退至长社，才遇到了来援救他的皇甫嵩，这才站稳脚跟。
皇甫嵩本来是要北上冀州的，结果刚要动身，就接到何进的军令，说是朱儁在颍川战败，而颍川郡离洛阳实在是太近了，皇帝惶恐，只能命他先拿下颍川，帮助朱儁，剿灭颍川郡的黄巾贼寇，
听说朱儁已经败退至长社，皇甫嵩直接就率军赶赴长社，与朱儁合兵一处，打退了波才的第一次试探性的进攻，一起守城。
汉军人少，又刚刚打了败仗，士气低落。波才的黄巾军则正好相反，连打胜仗，斗志满满，沿途打破各地地主豪强的坞堡，开仓放粮，各地的无地流民和饥民纷纷投军，最起码可以混口饭吃。
等到波才包围长社之时，波才的颍川黄巾军已经扩充到了二十万部众，虽然有不少混饭吃的杂鱼，可是人数还是数倍于汉军。
